Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)

Powerful experiential learning with horses as partners and teachers

Horses are prey animals and as such are always acutely aware of their surroundings - as a matter of survival.  They are able to discern the difference between a calm, non-threatening approach and aggressive and/or nervous energy - in fact, they are able to sense a predator's heart-rate from over 70 feet away to determine if it's a threat.  Horses are highly social herd animals, who are exceptionally emotionally intuitive.  They have a strong desire to be a part of a group, and they seek a confident leader who is clear with their communication to build trust.   Horses are very honest, reactive creatures who respond in real-time and don't hold grudges. A horse's behaviour in our presence is often simply a reflection of how we are feeling, how we present ourselves, and what we're doing.  This reaction and mirroring help us recognize and understand our behaviour and/or feelings, and gives us the opportunity to reflect and learn about ourselves.

By completing objective based exercises with a horse, participants build confidence and trust in themselves and others, are able to self-reflect on their behaviour and role within the group, learn to recognize behaviours and adapt appropriately, improve their communication, build relationships, and have fun while doing it!
